Solar PV Surge Protection

Photovoltaic systems are usually installed in open outdoor environments such as rooftops, solar farms, industrial parks and remote power stations. Long DC cable runs, exposed PV arrays and outdoor inverter equipment make the system highly vulnerable to lightning-induced surges and switching transients. A complete PV surge protection design should consider both the DC side and AC side of the system. CRESIN offers DC surge protective devices for PV strings and combiner boxes, as well as AC surge protection for inverter output and low-voltage distribution systems.

String / Combiner box input

For the PV DC side, select a Type 2 (T2) SPD rated at DC 600, 1000, 1200, or 1500 V, depending on the system voltage.

FAQ

Can CRESIN support large-scale solar farm projects?

Yes. CRESIN can provide SPD recommendations for rooftop solar, commercial PV systems, utility-scale solar farms, combiner boxes, inverters, monitoring systems, and AC distribution cabinets.

What DC voltage should be selected for PV SPD?

The SPD voltage rating should match the maximum PV system voltage. Common options include 600V DC, 1000V DC, 1200V DC, and 1500V DC.

Should solar PV systems use Type 1 or Type 2 SPD?

If the PV system has an external lightning protection system or a high risk of direct lightning current, Type 1 or Type 1+2 SPD may be required. For many common PV systems, Type 2 SPD is used to protect against induced surges.

Do I need SPD on both DC and AC sides of the inverter?

Yes. The DC side protects the PV array and inverter input, while the AC side protects the inverter output and connected distribution system.

Why do solar PV systems need surge protection?

Solar PV systems are often installed outdoors with long DC cable runs and exposed metal structures. Lightning-induced surges can enter through PV strings, inverter inputs, AC output lines, and monitoring systems.
